BRIT fever

So yesterday was the second instalment of my two days at the BRITs, and in all honesty by the time the ceremony started I was ready to get the hell outta there. There’s only one word to describe the scene; chaos.

Brits Brochure
So now that I can disclose what I was doing there, I can say that I was with the catering team (gotta pay the bills!!!) and with the best luck in the world I was responsible for 5 A-list tables. Situated in the front row, as close as I could get to the stage, my tables boasted the likes of Leona Lewis, JLS, Kasabian, and none other than Phil Collins. Whilst my tables were great, and Kasabian were absolutely lovely, a huge part of me was a bit disappointed I didn’t get Jay-Z, but in hindsight this might have been for the best, as he didn’t take his seat until the show had gone live. Instead I also had Lily Allen, who sadly failed to grace my lovely table with her presence, although as she was the first performer – I think I can let her off!

As the ‘talent’ arrived I was in prime position to watch all of the celebrities flood top their seats once dinner was announced, although rather than a flood, it was more like a slow but steady stream – with everyone coyly hanging back wishing to remain out of sight for as long as humanly possible. Lucky me literally rubbed shoulders with so many celebrities (but a lot of whom I was unsure as to how they got invited as it’s supposed to be strictly nominees and presenters...): JK Rowling, a suited Dizzee Rascal, Bat For Lashes (aka Natasha Kahn), A raspy-voiced Alesha Dixon (wearing a very short dress indeed, with horrible mismatching orange shoes), a diminutive Kylie, Mika, Holly Willoughby, Sinnita, Louis Walsh, Catharine Jenkins, Alexandra Burke... and the list goes on. Looking back now, quite hilariously Courtney Love really got my goat as she was saying hello to so many people that she held up traffic across the floor for what felt like an eternity, holding two very hot plates of yummy food.

Before all the guests arrived, I managed to catch the latter half of the full run-through, and got to see Kasabian practice a couple more times, I’m guessing due to the pyrotechnic complications. Whilst her singing was actually really good, I had to endure about four rehearsals of Cheryl Cole and dancers. Whilst I quite like Cheryl, I’m afraid I just don’t like the song Fight For This Love, as it’s just a bit too whinny – and four times over it was almost too much for my little brain to bear. What I will say is that I was impressed by how much effort she put into each and every performance, so much so that her and the dancers alike were a little weary after the fourth run.

Something that partly made my day (which I would have never expected it to), was hearing Robbie Williams round off the dress rehearsal. As the award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Music’ is always last (being the most prestigious and all), Robbie sang several of his hits, plus a Take That number at full pelt. Anyone who knows me will know that I’m not a Robbie fan, as I don’t think he’s that musically talented, however I’ll always be quick to say that I believe him to be a great showman and performer – which I discovered first hand. Like everyone else of a certain age nationwide, I too know all of the Robbie lyrics ever written which was what was so great about the performance. It’s not every day that you get to sing along to the man himself while working, let alone in what could only be classified as a ‘closed set’ in military lockdown.

A surprisingly overwhelming experience – which I guess for some reason I wasn’t fully expecting. I’m hoping it was in reaction to Robbie’s realisation of his big moment, as if he was just taking in his gargantuan achievement for the first time.

And that’s it... the rest you (by now, at least) know already.

BRITs sneak preview

Yesterday I had the pleasure of spending the day on the set of tonight’s BRIT Awards held within Earls Court Stadium. Whilst I cannot say much as to why I was there (for fear of the intense security coming down on me like a tonne of bricks) all I can say is that I’m very excited about tonight. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to fill you in as to why I was there (nowhere near as glamorous a reason as you’re hopefully thinking...) and I’ll also have a bit of gossip fingers crossed. Whilst there I thought I’d put my journalistic skills to good use and I found out that unless you’re a lucky musician or PR/agent of, a ticket to tonight’s event will set you back anywhere between £1,300-£2,500 – insane!

While I was doing my thing I got to hear most of the day’s warm up and was around for the majority of the run-through. As you all already know Peter Kay will be hosting, and let me tell you one thing – its going to be f**king hilarious! The quintessential British compare, Kay was in his element, so expect the usual series of witty one-liners. Something I did notice was that Kay was armed with a claxon (more commonly found in the hands of a football fan at the Saturday game) which I think he’ll be tooting all-night to anything he doesn’t approve of, from speeches to the audience etc.

What really made me laugh was Kay’s ingenious way of introducing Jay-Z (if I’m remembering correctly): “I’m not too sure I can mention many of his songs here on ITV so let’s just say he’s that hugely famous guy known for the song ‘American Gangster’ and goes by the name of Mr Jason Z” (zed) – absolutely brilliant!

Other tit-bits I gathered were the identities of some of the presenters such as Dame Shirley Bassey and Jonathan Ross who Kay piss-takingly introduced saying: “Please welcome the current host of Friday Night with Jonathan Ross...” Also presenting an award was Andy Serkis, who apparently fresh from promoting the Ian Drury biopic; Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll, is planning to put his acting career on hold to pursue a musical career of some description, so watch this space.

Performances I caught were the mighty Kasabian, who will be doing a rendition of their hit ‘Fire’ complete with brass band, and literal fire and pyrotechnics around the stage... making it rather warm indeed! I also heard Dizzee Rascal rehearsing his duet with Florence Welch, which is a version of her hit single ‘You Got the Love’.

Other than that not an awful lot was happening. Lots of mike checking (1,2,1,2) and Fearne Cotton popping up every now and again to rehearse her backstage interviews with random members of the production team posing as the celebs.... If only I had a camera (unfortunately not... everything had to be firmly locked away, I kid you not).

Lastly there was a huge intake of breath and gasps (from all us ladies) when a video message from none other than a very sexy looking Prince Harry came on, talking about what good work the BRITs do.

Gonna be a great show tonight so make sure you tune in now! Stay tuned for a second post tomorrow on all the shenanigans from the evening.

Dizzee Rascal live at Electric Proms last night

Last night on BBC2 I was lucky enough to catch Dizzee Rascal's Electric Proms set live from The Roundhouse. It was absolutely brilliant. Long have I been a fan of Dizzee and have follwed his career since he was championed by Jools Holland back in 2003 when he went on to win the Mercury Music Prize for his debut album Boy In Da Corner. I was fortunate enough to meet him at Underage Festival a couple of years back and he was so polite and sweet (which I don't think people would expect), and its just so nice to see him doing really well.
Highlights of the set were for me very clear. Being the Electric Proms he had to mix it up a little and with Dizzee it's good to expect the unexpected. That said I wasn't disappointed when he reworked two of his more recognisable songs from his first album. The first was Jus' A Rascal which he performed to the tune of Reptilia by The Stroke's. The Second was Stand Up Tall which he rocked along to Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit.
There is honestly only two words for someone who can mix and mash genres like that so effortlessly: AMAZING TALENT!!!
